Straddling the border between Swansea and Carmarthenshire, Hendy is a village that grew largely around its industrial heritage, specifically the tinplate works that once thrived along the banks of the River Loughor. Today, it functions as a practical gateway between the rural charm of the Gower Peninsula and the urban convenience of the city, sitting just off Junction 48 of the M4. The geography of the village is defined by the river, which separates it from its larger neighbour, Pontarddulais; despite being in different counties, the two are physically joined by a stone bridge, making it easy to hop across for the independent shops and railway station. It feels like a settled community with a distinct identity, where the flat valley floor gives way to rising hills that offer broad views over the Loughor Estuary. With the local primary school at its heart and a handful of long-standing pubs, it’s a place that manages to stay quiet while remaining exceptionally well-connected to the wider South Wales transport corridor.
