Port Talbot is a town defined by its dramatic geography, squeezed into a narrow coastal strip between the steep, green hills of the Afan Valley and the wide sweep of Aberavon Sands. Historically part of Glamorgan, its identity was reshaped in the 19th century by the Talbot family, who developed the docks and copper works that preceded the arrival of the massive Abbey Steelworks. While the chimneys of the heavy industry dominate the skyline and remain the backbone of the local economy, they sit surprisingly close to miles of sandy coastline and the vast mountain bike trails of Afan Forest Park. The town is split by the M4 motorway, which cuts right through its heart, providing incredibly fast links to Swansea and Cardiff, though it means the layout of the residential streets can feel a bit fragmented. It’s a place where you can be standing in a rugged woodland park one minute and on a three-mile promenade the next, all while living in the shadow of one of the last major industrial hubs in the UK.
