Baglan occupies a distinct position on the slopes of Mynydd Dinas, overlooking the industrial sweep of the Neath Port Talbot coastline. It is a place of two halves: the older village, centered around the 19th-century St. Catharine’s Church and the ruins of the medieval St. Baglan’s, and the more modern residential tiers that climb the hillside. Locally, it's known for its steep topography, which grants many streets expansive views across Swansea Bay toward Mumbles Head. For daily practicalities, the area is divided into Baglan Moors, which hosts the larger retail parks and the solar-powered Baglan Energy Park, and the higher residential 'Slope'. While it sits right next to the M4 and the heavy industry of Port Talbot, the village retains immediate access to Baglan Park and the Baglan Mountain trails, where the urban landscape quickly gives way to steep woodland and open bracken. It is a functional, well-connected spot, served by its own railway station on the South Wales Main Line, positioned between the amenities of Neath and the seafront at Aberavon.
