Nestled in the Afan Valley just north of Port Talbot, Cwmavon - or *Cwmafan* in Welsh - is a village defined by its steep geography and industrial resilience. Historically, it was the powerhouse of the valley, dominated by the massive copper and tinplate works of the Governor and Company of Copper Miners in England during the 19th century. Today, the smoke has long cleared, leaving behind a community laid out in traditional stone terraced rows that cling to the hillsides. Geographically, it serves as a gateway; while the M4 and the retail hubs of the coastal plain are only a few minutes' drive away, the village itself feels deeply rural, bordered by the lush forestry of the Afan Forest Park. It is a practical spot for those who work in the surrounding towns but want the mountains on their doorstep, offering immediate access to some of the UK’s best mountain biking and hiking trails along the river Afan. Unlike the flatter coastal areas, Cwmavon retains a distinct valley identity, where the weather often breaks over the high ridges and the local life centers around its long-standing pubs and the community centre.
