Workington sits on the west coast of Cumbria, right where the River Derwent meets the Irish Sea. It’s an old industrial port town that grew rapidly during the nineteenth century due to the local iron and steel industries, and you can still see that heritage in the layout of the town and the sturdy Victorian architecture around the centre. It’s a practical place to live; the town centre is largely pedestrianized with a decent mix of high street names and independent shops, and there are good rail links heading north towards Carlisle and south through the coastal villages. To the east, you’ve got the Lake District National Park on your doorstep, with the fells around Loweswater and Crummock Water reachable in about twenty minutes by car. It’s a town of transitions, where the rugged, working coastline gives way to some of the most famous landscapes in the country, offering a straightforward pace of life with plenty of room to breathe.
