Woking sits in the heart of the Surrey heathlands, built largely on the back of the railway’s arrival in the mid-19th century. Its location is its biggest practical asset; the station is a major junction on the South Western Main Line, meaning you can get into London Waterloo in about 25 minutes, while the nearby M25 and M3 provide easy road access to the rest of the country. Dominated by its 1970s and 80s pedestrianised town centre, the skyline has shifted significantly in recent years with several new high-rise developments near the station. Beyond the modern core, the area is surprisingly green. The Basingstoke Canal cuts right through the town, offering miles of level towpath for walking or cycling, and the vast, wild expanses of Horsell Common sit just to the north. Historically, it holds a unique spot in British culture as the setting for H.G. Wells’ *The War of the Worlds*, a connection still marked by a large tripod sculpture in the town centre. It’s a functional, well-connected place that manages to balance its busy commuter hub status with quick access to the quieter pace of the surrounding Surrey countryside.
