Usworth is a small suburban area located in Tyne and Wear, England, in close proximity to Washington. It has a rich history rooted in coal mining, with the Usworth Colliery operating until 1953. The area also played a significant role in World War II, as it was home to the Royal Ordnance Factory which produced ammunition for the British armed forces. Today, Usworth is largely residential and boasts an array of amenities such as shops, schools and community centres. Sporting facilities include football pitches, cricket fields, and bowling greens. The town is adjacent to the A1231 road which provides easy access by car to surrounding areas such as Sunderland and Newcastle upon Tyne.
