Washington sits right in the heart of the North East, neatly positioned between the urban hubs of Newcastle, Durham, and Sunderland. While its designation as a ‘new town’ in the 1960s defined much of its modern layout - characterised by distinct residential villages and a comprehensive network of grid roads and cycle paths - its roots go back much further. At its core lies the old sandstone village and Washington Old Hall, the ancestral home of George Washington’s family. Today, the town is arguably best known for its industrial significance as the home of the Nissan plant, but it feels surprisingly green for a manufacturing centre. The local landscape is dominated by the Penshaw Monument on the horizon and the shaded trails of the WWT Wetlands Centre along the River Wear. It’s a practical place to get around, with the A1(M) and A19 right on the doorstep, making it a functional base for anyone needing to navigate the wider region.
