Wroughton sits just below the northern edge of the Marlborough Downs, acting as a sort of gateway where the high chalk grasslands meet the Vale of the White Horse. It is a substantial village, separated from the southern fringes of Swindon by a narrow but important green gap and the steep climb of Elcombe Hill. The layout of the place still reflects its history, with the older, more characterful stone cottages clustered around the Church of St John the Baptist and the Pitchens, while the lower parts of the village have expanded over the decades into more practical residential streets. It is well-served by local infrastructure, retaining a high street with enough independent shops and pubs to keep it self-sufficient, alongside the sprawling grounds of the Science Museum Group’s National Collections Centre located on the former RAF airfield nearby. Because of its position, you can be in the middle of a busy town centre in ten minutes, yet walk in the other direction and be on the Ridgeway national trail, looking out over the Iron Age earthworks of Barbury Castle.
