Lying just over a mile southwest of Skipton, Carleton (often referred to locally as Carleton-in-Craven) is a small village that sits where the flat pasture lands of the Aire Valley begin to rise toward the gritstone heights of Carleton Moor. Historically, the village underwent a significant transformation in the 19th century when it evolved from a farming hamlet into a busy textile hub, centered around the high-rise gritstone structure of Swan Mill. Today, the mill has been converted into apartments, but it remains the village’s most prominent landmark. The community is physically defined by the River Aire, which separates it from the busier transport corridors of the A629 and the railway line, meaning that while the amenities of a major market town are within walking distance, the village itself feels notably self-contained. Life here tends to revolve around the primary school, the local pub, and the network of footpaths that lead directly from the village street up toward the "Catlow" and the surrounding hills. It’s a place where the landscape still dictates the layout, hemmed in by the river on one side and the steep climb of the Pennines on the other.
