Known as the ‘Gateway to the Dales,’ Skipton is a traditional market town where the grid of steep, cobbled streets still follows the layout established in the Middle Ages. Life here revolves around the High Street, which is unusually wide to accommodate the market that has traded several days a week for over 800 years. At the top of the town sits Skipton Castle, one of the most complete and well-preserved medieval fortresses in England, while the Leeds-Liverpool Canal cuts right through the centre, offering level walking paths toward Gargrave and beyond. Geographically, it’s a practical base; you have the rugged limestone landscape of the Yorkshire Dales National Park immediately to the north, yet the railway station provides direct, reliable connections to the industrial hubs of Leeds and Bradford. It’s a place where the infrastructure of a busy working town meets the realities of life on the edge of the Pennines, balanced by a good range of independent shops and schools that serve a wide rural catchment area.
