Eye sits on the edge of the Fens, just a few miles northeast of Peterborough, where the landscape begins to flatten out towards the coast. Historically, its name stems from the Old English for ‘island,’ a nod to its origins as a patch of high ground surrounded by marshland. While the village has grown considerably with modern housing, it still retains a distinct character, anchored by the stone spire of St Matthew’s Church and the presence of the old brickworks’ clay pits, which have since been reclaimed by nature. Locally, life tends to revolve around the high street shops and the primary school, while the nearby Green Wheel cycle path provides a straightforward, car-free route into the city or out toward Crowland. It’s a practical spot that managed to keep its village identity despite its proximity to the A47 and the expanding urban fringe.
