Peterborough is a city defined by its position on the edge of the Fens, acting as a gateway between the East Midlands and East Anglia. At its heart sits the Norman cathedral, famous for its grand West Front and as the original burial place of Mary, Queen of Scots. Beyond the historic core, the city expanded rapidly in the 1960s and 70s as a 'New Town', which left a legacy of extensive parklands like Ferry Meadows and an integrated network of cycle paths known as the Green Wheel. Geographically, it is a significant transport hub; the East Coast Main Line connects it to London King’s Cross in about 50 minutes, while the A1(M) provides straightforward road access north and south. This blend of medieval roots and planned modern infrastructure gives the city a spacious, functional feel, where quiet riverside walks are often only a short distance from the busy regional shopping centres.
