Perched on the edge of the Charnwood Forest, Markfield is a village that owes its rugged character to the granite beneath its soil. It sits at a high point in the Leicestershire landscape, dominated by the jagged silhouette of Hill Hole - a former quarry turned nature reserve that offers some of the best views across the county. Historically, the village was shaped by the quarrying and hosiery industries, and you can still see that heritage in the traditional granite cottages clustered around the lower end of the village. Geographically, it is a convenient hub, situated just off the A50 and moments from the M1, which makes it a practical base for reaching Leicester or Loughborough. Despite its accessibility, it retains a distinct rural identity, with the National Forest on the doorstep and a network of footpaths leading directly from the residential streets into the ancient, rocky woodlands of Bradgate Park nearby.
