Maghull sits about eight miles north of Liverpool’s city centre, positioned logically between the urban sprawl of the city and the flat, fertile agricultural land of West Lancashire. It’s a town defined largely by its transport links; the Leeds and Liverpool Canal cuts right through the heart of the community, once serving as a vital trade artery and now offering miles of level towpath walks. The town grew significantly in the mid-20th century, evolving from a small settlement mentioned in the Domesday Book into a substantial residential hub. Today, it is well-served by two railway stations on the Northern Line and sits conveniently near the junction of the M57 and M58. While it has its own functional shopping square and several well-regarded schools, there is a distinct sense of being on the edge of the countryside here, with the Trans Pennine Trail nearby and the coastal towns of Crosby and Formby only a short drive to the west.
