Brough sits on the northern bank of the Humber Estuary in the East Riding of Yorkshire, about 12 miles west of Hull. It’s a place defined largely by its geography; the town is caught between the flatlands of the river and the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds, providing a direct gateway to the Wolds Way for those who walk the hills. Its history is deeply rooted in transportation, beginning as the Roman town of *Petuaria* - the terminus of Ermine Street where a ferry once crossed the water - and later evolving into a hub of British aviation. Since 1916, the massive factory on the edge of town has been a major employer, synonymous with the development of the Buccaneer and Hawk jets. Today, life revolves around a blend of that industrial heritage and the practicalities of modern travel. The railway station is one of the busiest in the area, offering a direct line to London King’s Cross, while the proximity to the A63 makes it a logical base for those working across the M62 corridor. It’s a functional, well-connected town that manages to feel settled and quiet once you step away from the main commuter routes.
