Brighton is defined largely by its physical constraints; tucked between the steep chalk hills of the South Downs and the English Channel, the city has a compact, linear feel that makes it remarkably walkable. Geographically, it sits on the south coast of East Sussex, roughly fifty miles due south of London, though it feels a world away from the capital once you hit the pebble shoreline. Historically, it evolved from the fishing village of Brighthelmstone into a fashionable health resort during the late 18th century, a legacy still visible in the sweeping Regency architecture of Kemp Town and Hove. While the central "Lanes" are a maze of 16th-century footpaths, much of the practical day-to-day life happens in the distinct uphill neighbourhoods like Seven Dials or Hanover, where the streets of Victorian terraces are notoriously steep. The sea remains the primary constant here, dictating everything from the local microclimate to the rust-prone maintenance of the buildings, providing a sense of openness that balances the density of the urban centre.
