Sitting just a few miles west of Barnsley, Dodworth feels very much like a village that has retained its own identity despite its growth over the decades. It occupies a ridge that offers some surprisingly far-reaching views across the Dearne Valley, marking the spot where the industrial landscape of South Yorkshire starts to give way to the greener foothills of the Pennines. Historically, the village was built on a mix of linen weaving and coal mining - the site of the former Dodworth Colliery is now a business park - but today it functions as a practical hub for the wider region. Its location is its biggest practical asset, sitting right on Junction 37 of the M1, which makes it a straightforward base for anyone working in Sheffield, Leeds, or Manchester. Despite that proximity to the motorway, the village centre still has a traditional layout with local shops, several long-standing pubs, and a small railway station on the Penistone Line. It is the kind of place where you can be on a train to a city centre in minutes, yet still find yourself on a quiet public footpath heading toward the open countryside of Silkstone and beyond just as quickly.
