Brierley sits on a high ridge about six miles north-east of Barnsley town centre, offering some of the widest views across the Dearne Valley towards the Pennines. It was once a significant manorial seat, and you can still see the remains of the moat at Brierley Hall, which dates back to the time when the Brereley family held the land. While the village expanded during the peak of the local mining industry - most notably serving the nearby Grimethorpe and Brierley Colliery - it has retained a more rural, compact feel than many of its neighbours. Most of the practical amenities, including the primary school and local shops, are clustered around the main junction of the B6273, while the surrounding landscape is criss-crossed by old footpaths and bridleways. It’s a quiet spot these days, popular with those who work in Barnsley, Wakefield, or Doncaster, as it sits roughly equidistant between them and provides straightforward access to the A1(M) at Redhouse.
