Sitting on the upland ridge just southwest of Wrexham, Ponciau - whose name translates from the Welsh for ‘hillocks’ or ‘banks’ - carries a physical landscape shaped by its industrial past. The village was built on the back of coal and ironstone mining, and while the pits are long gone, their legacy remains in the layout of the streets and the green spaces that replaced them. The heart of the village is Ponciau Banks Park, a sprawling common area that was reclaimed from old colliery spoil heaps and now serves as the community’s main hub for sports and walking. Architecturally, you’ll find a mix of traditional Victorian terraced cottages and mid-century developments, all within easy reach of the local shops on North Road. It’s a practical location for those working in the city or at the nearby industrial estate, yet it retains its own distinct identity, tucked away from the main trunk roads but still overlooking the Cheshire Plain to the east.
