Penycae sits on the rising slopes above the Dee Valley, about five miles south-west of Wrexham, where the urban landscape begins to give way to the hills of the Ruabon Mountain. Historically, the village grew around the coal and iron industries that once dominated this part of the county, and that heritage is still visible in the sturdy stone architecture of the older cottages and the presence of several established chapels. Today, it is a quiet, predominantly residential community defined by its steep topography and the dramatic backdrop of the moorland to the west. Practical life in the village centres on the local primary schools and a few independent shops, while the nearby Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and the various trails through the Nant-y-Ffrith valley provide immediate access to the outdoors. Because of its elevation, many parts of the village offer clear, expansive views across the Cheshire Plain, making it feel more connected to the open countryside than its proximity to the town might suggest.
