Nestled between the South Downs and the English Channel, Ferring retains a distinct village identity that sets it apart from its larger neighbour, Worthing, just two miles to the east. Historically a small agricultural community mentioned in the Domesday Book, the village is now structurally divided into North and South Ferring by the A259, with the older, more traditional flint-walled buildings concentrated around the 12th century St Andrew’s Church. It is a geographically constrained settlement, bounded to the west by the open gap of the Ferring Rife - a local watercourse that provides a natural buffer and a haven for birdlife. The shoreline here is notably quieter than the nearby coastal resorts, consisting of a pebble beach that reveals expansive sand flats at low tide. Life in the village tends to centre around the two small clusters of independent shops and the active community centre, while the lack of a through-road to the seafront helps maintain a pace of life that feels intentionally steady.
