Twyford sits roughly four miles south of Winchester, nestled within the western edge of the South Downs National Park where the chalk hills meet the Itchen Valley. The village takes its name from the two ancient fords that once crossed the River Itchen, and water remains a defining feature of the local landscape, with the famous trout stream and its associated water meadows framing the western boundary. It is a geographically compact settlement, centered around a small cluster of shops, a post office, and two long-standing pubs, with a mix of brick and flint cottages and larger Victorian villas. Historically, it is known for its long association with education, being home to one of the oldest preparatory schools in the country, and for its diverse archaeological heritage, which includes a hidden druidic stone in the churchyard. For those traveling further afield, the village is unusually well-connected for its size; Shawford railway station is just a short walk across the fields, providing direct links to London Waterloo and Southampton, while the M3 is accessible without being audible from the village center.
