Wigton is a traditional Cumbrian market town, situated on the Solway Plain about ten miles west of Carlisle. It serves as a practical hub for the surrounding rural communities, with a history rooted in the local agricultural economy and its past as a centre for tanning and weaving. Geographically, it sits in an open landscape between the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the northern fells of the Lake District, providing easy access to both without the crowded feel of the national park interior. The town is built around its central market square, home to the landmark ornate Victorian drinking fountain, while the local railway station connects the town directly to the Cumbrian Coast Line. It’s a town with a steady, functional pace of life, well-served by a long-standing secondary school and a variety of independent shops that have survived here longer than in many other northern towns.
