Whitehaven is a coastal town on the edge of the Cumbrian fells, built largely on the wealth of its 18th-century port and the coal seams that once ran deep under the sea bed. Its layout is unusually orderly for a northern town, following a planned grid of streets commissioned by the Lowther family, which remains lined with original Georgian architecture. Life here is shaped by its geography: you are positioned between the Irish Sea and the steep rise of the Lake District fells, with Ennerdale Water and Wasdale both within a short drive. The town serves as a functional hub for the local area, offering a mix of independent shops and essential services around the marina, which occupies the former commercial docks. While the heavy industry of the past is gone, the town retains a distinct maritime character, marked by the iconic "Candlestick" chimney on the cliffs and the long stone piers that protect the harbour from the Solway tides.
