West Wickham sits on the edge of the London suburbs, tucked between Shirley and Hayes on the border of Kent. Historically a small farming village, it transformed following the arrival of the Mid-Kent Railway in 1882, though it still manages to retain a distinct, self-contained character. The heart of the area is the long High Street, which provides most of the essentials, and the village’s Tudor history is still visible at West Wickham Manor and the flint-walled St John the Baptist Church. Geographically, it’s a bit of a gateway to the countryside; while you can be at Cannon Street or Charing Cross in about forty minutes, you are also within walking distance of Blake Recreation Ground and the ancient woodlands of West Wickham Common. It is a practical, residential spot where the urban grid of South East London starts to give way to the more undulating, wooded landscapes of the North Downs.
