Welwyn Garden City stands as a unique landmark in urban planning, founded by Sir Ebenezer Howard in 1920 as the second garden city in England. Located in Hertfordshire, about 20 miles north of King's Cross, the town was designed to combine the benefits of the city and the countryside. This is immediately visible in the layout; the broad, tree-lined boulevards and the neo-Georgian architecture of the town centre give it a spacious, orderly feel that is rare for a town of its size. The iconic Coronation Fountain serves as a central landmark, framed by the long Parkway greensward.
