Horbury sits on a hill overlooking the Calder Valley, about three miles west of Wakefield city centre. It is a town that still feels like a distinct community, largely because it isn't bisected by major trunk roads, though the M1 is only a short drive away at junction 40. The geography is dominated by its position above the River Calder and the Navigation, providing a mix of steep residential streets and flatter, green spaces like Carr Lodge Park. Historically, the town’s prosperity was built on the woollen industry and the Charles Roberts wagon works, but today the architectural character is defined by its stone-built Victorian terraces and the unusual Grade I listed Church of St Peter and St Leonard, designed by the local architect John Carr. The town centre remains active, with a traditional high street focused around Queen Street and High Street, where small independent shops and local amenities are still the norm rather than the exception.
