Perched on the edge of the Colne Valley at the northernmost tip of Hillingdon, Harefield maintains a distinct village identity that feels worlds away from the urban sprawl of nearby Uxbridge. It is geographically defined by its steep topography and its proximity to the Grand Union Canal and the string of lakes that make up the Mid-Colne Valley. Historically, the area is synonymous with its world-renowned heart hospital, which has been the village's primary landmark since the early 20th century. The settlement is centered around a traditional green and a high street that provides the essentials, but the real draw is the immediate access to the Colne Valley Regional Park. Walking tracks lead directly from the residential streets down to the towpaths and wetlands, offering a landscape of water and woodland that is rare for a London borough. While the village lacks its own railway station, it is connected by bus to the Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines at Uxbridge and the Chiltern Railways line at Denham, making it a functional, if slightly more secluded, corner of the capital.
