Porthtowan sits in a deep valley on Cornwall’s north coast, defined by the high cliffs and the expansive sandy beach that disappears at high tide but joins up with Chapel Porth when the water retreats. Historically, the village was shaped by the local copper mining industry, part of the wider St Agnes mining district, and you can still see the remnants of the Tywarnhayle mine workings on the surrounding slopes. Geographically, it is about eight miles from Truro, making the city’s amenities accessible within a twenty-minute drive, though the village itself functions as a close-knit community centered around the surf and the South West Coast Path. The steep topography means much of the housing is built into the hillsides, offering views of the Atlantic, while the lower village focuses on the dunes and the tidal pool tucked against the cliffs. It is a place where the weather dictates the pace of life, and while the summer brings visitors for the surf, the winter months reveal a more rugged, quiet character shaped by the prevailing westerly winds.
