Bampton sits on the edge of the Exmoor National Park, tucked into a valley where the River Batherm meets the old limestone foothills. It’s a stone-built town that carries a distinct sense of permanence, largely owing to the local grey stone used in its cottages and the prominent 12th-century church of St Michael and All Angels. Historically, it was a center for the wool trade and stone quarrying, though today it serves as a quiet hub for the surrounding Exe Valley farms. It is situated about seven miles north of Tiverton, which provides the nearest supermarkets and secondary schooling, while the town itself maintains a self-sufficient high street with a traditional butcher, a post office, and a handful of independent pubs. The geography here is marked by steep, wooded hills and winding lanes that lead up toward the open moorland, and while the town feels secluded, the M5 and Tiverton Parkway station are reachable in about twenty-five minutes, offering a practical link to Exeter and London. Every October, the town follows a charter dating back to 1258 by hosting the Bampton Charter Fair, an event that still brings livestock and traditional markets to the streets, anchoring the community firmly in its agricultural roots.
