Thirsk sits in a practical spot in the Vale of Mowbray, acting as a natural bridge between the North York Moors to the east and the Dales to the west. It is a traditional market town where the layout still follows the medieval plan, centered around a cobbled market square that remains the heart of local trade every Monday and Saturday. Cod Beck flows through the town near the flinty, 15th-century St Mary’s Church, providing a green corridor that escapes the busier cut-and-thrust of the central shops. While many know it for its connection to the vet James Herriot, the town's daily life is more defined by its accessibility; it is bisected by the A19 and served by a railway station about a mile out of the town centre on the East Coast Main Line. This makes it a strangely quiet but well-connected hub, retaining its own distinct identity as a working town rather than a preserved museum piece.
