TOWNHILL sits on a steep ridge overlooking the sweep of Swansea Bay, a position that defines the character of the place. Developed primarily in the early 20th century as part of the ‘Garden City’ movement, the area was designed with wide, curving streets and plenty of green space, intended to provide fresh air away from the industrial smoke of the valley floor. Today, it remains a busy residential area, perhaps best known for its panoramic views that stretch across the city centre towards the Mumbles and the Bristol Channel. Life here is dictated by the geography; the incline means walking into town is a downward breeze, though the return journey is a significant climb. While the local centre provides the essentials, the area is practically connected to the city's main hospitals and the university by regular bus routes, making it a functional, elevated suburb with a distinct sense of height and openness.
