Surbiton is a suburban riverside town in South West London, historically part of Surrey, that sits roughly twelve miles from the city centre. While it is technically within the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, it has a distinct identity rooted in its 1830s origins as a railway hub; when local landowners in Kingston rejected the new mainline, the station was built here instead, effectively creating the town. This legacy remains its greatest practical asset, with the Art Deco station providing remarkably fast, direct links into Waterloo. Architecturally, the area is a mix of grand Victorian villas and leafy residential avenues that lead down towards the Thames path, where you can walk or cycle along the river bank towards Kingston or Hampton Court. Life here tends to revolve around the independent shops and cafes along Victoria Road and the Maple Road area, which hosts a popular monthly farmers' market, lending the place a genuine community feel that distinguishes it from the busier commercial pace of its neighbours.
