Whitburn sits on a stretch of limestone cliffs between South Shields and Sunderland, retaining the distinct layout of a traditional coastal village despite the post-war housing that now surrounds its historic core. At its heart is a wide, leafy conservation area centered on the 13th-century church of York Minster’s namesake, St Mary’s, and a village pond that serves as a focal point for the local community. To the east, the land opens out into the coastal grasslands of the Bents and Whitburn Sands, while the nearby Souter Lighthouse - the first in the world designed to be powered by electricity - marks the rugged edge of the North Sea. Living here means balancing a quiet, almost rural pace of life with the practicalities of being three miles from Sunderland city centre. It is a place defined by its exposure to the North Sea elements, its cricket club, and its long-standing connection to the surrounding farmland, much of which still acts as a green buffer from the northern South Tyneside suburbs.
