Sunbury-on-Thames sits on the north bank of the river, roughly fifteen miles southwest of central London, split into two distinct areas. Lower Sunbury, the older riverside village, retains a quieter pace with its historic walled garden and views of Wheatley’s Ait. It is an area defined by the water, where the Thames Path serves as a main artery for walking toward Hampton Court or Shepperton. Further inland, Sunbury Common offers a more suburban feel, housing the main shopping parade and the railway station, which provides a direct line into Waterloo that takes about fifty minutes. Geographically, the town is exceptionally well-connected; it is sliced by the A316 and marks the start of the M3, making it a practical base for those who need to navigate the M25 or travel toward Heathrow. While modern developments and schools have grown around it, the town’s layout still reflects its origins as a rural parish, balanced between the busy transport corridors of the north and the slower, green fringes of the river to the south.
