Stevenage sits about 30 miles north of London in the Hertfordshire countryside, positioned as a bridge between the capital and the rolling hills of the East of England. Most people know it as the UK’s first 'New Town' - a post-war project designed to offer green space and modern planning away from the cramped conditions of London - but the history actually stretches back much further, evidenced by the Six Hills Roman barrows that still stand along the side of the road. Architecturally, it’s a town of two halves: there’s the historic Old Town with its coaching inns and high street charm, and the carefully planned New Town, which pioneered the concept of a completely pedestrianised shopping centre. One of the best things about living here is the cycle network; it was built with over 45 miles of segregated tracks that keep bikes entirely away from cars, making it surprisingly easy to get around on two wheels. You’re also well-connected by rail, with the East Coast Main Line getting you into King’s Cross in under 25 minutes, and Fairlands Valley Park provides over 100 acres of woodland and lakes right in the middle of everything.
