South Moor sits on the western edge of Stanley, rising up as a distinct community defined by its long rows of traditional terraced housing and its deep connections to the North West Durham coalfield. Historically, the village grew rapidly to serve the pits, most notably the William Pit which once dominated the local landscape and economy. Today, that industrial footprint has been reclaimed as green space; the Eden Hill and South Moor areas are surrounded by surprisingly rugged countryside, offering high vantage points with clear views across the Wear Valley. At its heart, the locality retains a practical independence, centered around the park and the traditional shops along Park Road, while serving as a functional gateway for those commuting toward Consett, Chester-le-Street, or Durham City. It is a place where the grid-like simplicity of the nineteenth-century streets meets the quiet, open hills of the hilltop plateau.
