Stalybridge sits in the foothills of the Pennines, where the rugged landscape of the Peak District begins to take over from the sprawl of Greater Manchester. Historically a key player in the cotton industry, the town is defined by its industrial grit and its steep, wooded valleys. The Huddersfield Narrow Canal runs straight through the centre - famous for having the deepest lock in the country - and the restored canal basin has become a quiet focal point for the town. Geographically, it’s a place of two halves: you have the convenience of a direct, fifteen-minute train link into Manchester Victoria, but you can also walk ten minutes from the station and find yourself on the open moors of Wild Bank. It’s a practical spot for those who work in the city but prefer the wetter, cooler air of the hills, and it still retains a traditional town centre, complete with one of the most famous Victorian railway refreshment rooms in the North.
