South Petherton is a substantial, honey-coloured village built mostly from the local Hamstone, sitting just off the A303 between Ilminster and Yeovil. It feels more like a small country town than a village, centred around a light, airy square and the distinctive octagonal tower of St Peter and St Paul’s Church. Geographically, it occupies a gentle ridge overlooking the Somerset Levels, which means much of the surrounding land is exceptionally fertile - a fact reflected in its long history of flax and hemp production. Today, the village is unusually self-sufficient for its size; it manages to sustain a proper butcher, a baker, and a surprising variety of independent shops, alongside a community-run junior school and a local hospital. It's a practical place where people tend to stay long-term, largely because the daily essentials are all within walking distance, yet the open countryside of the South Petherton Fold is right on the doorstep.
