South Brent sits in a bit of a sweet spot on the southern edge of Dartmoor, tucked just under the moorland slopes of Brent Hill. It’s a village that has managed to keep a proper sense of self, largely because it isn’t just a tourist stop-off; it’s a working community with a long history tied to the wool trade and the River Avon, which runs right through its heart. Geographically, it’s quite practical, as you’re positioned right on the edge of the National Park for walking, yet the A38 is close enough to make trips into Totnes, Exeter, or Plymouth relatively straightforward. The village centre feels lived-in, with a decent spread of independent shops, a primary school, and a strong tradition of local festivals and sustainability projects that keep things active year-round. It’s the kind of place where the landscape changes quickly from the sheltered, wooded valley of the river to the open, rugged high moor just a short walk uphill.
