Skelmersdale - or "Skem" as it’s known to everyone around here - is a town of two distinct halves sitting in the West Lancashire hills between Liverpool and Wigan. The original Victorian village was transformed in the 1960s when it was designated a New Town, which is why you’ll find a unique layout today dominated by an ambitious, traffic-light-free roundabout system and plenty of Brutalist architecture. Geographically, it’s practical for commuters, positioned right at the end of the M58 with easy links to the M6 and the Merseyrail network via nearby Upholland or Ormskirk. What really defines the town, though, is the amount of green space woven between the housing estates; the Tawd Valley Park follows the river right through the heart of the town, offering miles of wooded trails that make it feel far more rural than its industrial heritage suggests. It’s a self-contained place with its own pace, where the expansive views of the Lancashire plain are never more than a short walk away.
