Bapchild sits just to the east of Sittingbourne, clustered along the ancient Roman road of Watling Street (the A2). It’s a village that has managed to retain a distinct identity despite its proximity to the larger town, largely thanks to the orchards and hop gardens that still border parts of the parish. Historically, it was a place of some importance, hosting ecclesiastical councils as far back as the 7th century, though today the pace is much quieter, centred around the flint-built Church of St Laurence and the popular village cricket pitch. For getting around, it’s practical; you’re on a direct bus route into Sittingbourne for the rail links to London Victoria and St Pancras, and the village itself has a primary school and a local pub, The Fox and Goose, which has served the community for centuries. While the main road carries a fair amount of through-traffic, the lanes heading south quickly lead into the rolling landscape of the North Kent Fruit Belt, offering plenty of space for walking toward the neighbouring hamlet of Rodmersham.
