Shoreham-by-Sea sits in a distinctive spot where the River Adur meets the English Channel, shaped by a geography that splits the town into three clear characters. There is the town centre, with its flint-walled cottages and the massive Norman architecture of St Mary de Haura; the beach to the south, a shingle spit lined with eclectic residential architecture; and the riverside, where houseboats are moored along the mudflats. Historically a significant port and later a pioneer in British aviation - with the 1910 airfield still operating to the west - the town remains defined by its relationship with the water. The Adur Footbridge connects the high street directly to the beach, while the South Downs rise steeply to the north, providing a natural boundary that keeps the town feeling compact. While it has a working harbour at its eastern end, the central areas feel more tucked away, centered around a small network of independent shops and a long-standing monthly farmers' market in the pedestrianised heart of the town.
