Shildon sits in the rolling landscape of County Durham, positioned roughly two miles east of Bishop Auckland and eleven miles north of Darlington. It is a town defined by its role as the 'Cradle of the Railways'; it served as the original terminus for the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825, a legacy that is still very visible today through the presence of the Locomotion museum. Geographically, the town is compact, with most local amenities and terraced housing concentrated around the central commercial spine, while newer developments have gradually expanded towards the outskirts. It remains well-connected for those commuting across the North East, with its own railway station on the Tees Valley Line and straightforward road access to the A1(M). While its industrial peak has passed, the town retains a strong sense of community and a practical, unpretentious character, surrounded by the quiet, green spaces of the Wear Valley.
