Sheringham sits on a particularly dramatic stretch of the North Norfolk coast, where the sandy shoreline is framed by some of the county’s highest ground. Unlike many nearby coastal towns, it still maintains a very active fishing fleet; you’ll often see the local boats hauled up onto the shingle at the foot of the west slipway, with the day's catch of crab and lobster sold nearby. The town grew significantly with the arrival of the railway in 1887, and that Victorian influence remains clear in the flint-adorned architecture and the preserved steam line that runs inland to Holt. Life here feels grounded in the landscape, with the vast Beeston Bump providing a vantage point over the North Sea and the wooded trails of Sheringham Park offering a different perspective just a mile or so inland. It’s a place where the practicalities of a working town meet the unpredictable nature of the coast, remaining functional and lived-in even when the summer crowds thin out.
