Built across seven hills at the confluence of the River Don and its four tributaries, Sheffield remains defined by its unique geography. It is famously one of the greenest cities in Europe, with a footprint that is one-third Peak District National Park and a tree population that outnumbers its residents. While its global reputation was forged in the 19th-century steel industry - an era that left behind a legacy of robust industrial architecture and the world’s oldest football club - the city has since evolved into a significant hub for outdoor sports and advanced manufacturing. Because of the steep topography, the character of the city changes rapidly from one postcode to the next, transitioning from dense urban centres to rugged moorland in a matter of miles. It functions less like a sprawling metropolis and more like a collection of distinct villages, where the practicalities of city life are constantly balanced by immediate access to the open countryside.
