Sevenoaks is a market town in Kent defined largely by its position on the edge of the North Downs and its direct historical relationship with Knole, one of the country’s largest houses. The town’s name dates back to at least the 12th century, though only one of the seven eponymous oak trees planted to commemorate the coronation of Edward VII still stands behind the vine; several replacements have been planted since the Great Storm of 1987. Geographically, it sits on a greensand ridge, offering a landscape of steep hills and dense woodland that hem in the town centre. This setting creates a distinct separation from the sprawl of Greater London, even though the train journey to London Bridge takes less than half an hour. Life here tends to revolve around the intersection of a traditional high street and the thousand-acre deer park at Knole, which remains open to the public for walking. It is a place where the proximity to the M25 is balanced by the immediate quiet of the Kent Downs, making it a functional commuter hub that nonetheless retains the atmosphere of a self-contained town.
