Selby is a market town in North Yorkshire that feels deeply shaped by its position on the banks of the River Ouse and its long history as a terminal for the canal system. At its heart sits the massive Selby Abbey, a remarkably preserved piece of 11th-century architecture that dominates the low-lying skyline for miles. Geographically, the town serves as a practical hub for the region; it sits roughly 14 miles south of York and 20 miles east of Leeds, with a mainline railway station that makes it a strategic point for those commuting across the north or down to London. While the town’s industrial roots in shipbuilding and coal mining have largely faded, it remains a busy, working place with a traditional Monday market and a mix of Georgian and Victorian brickwork lining the central streets. It is a flat, navigable landscape, surrounded by arable farmland, where the pace of life feels grounded in the steady transit of the river and the rail lines.
