Nestled within the 95-mile stretch of the Jurassic Coast, Beer is a village shaped largely by its geology and its deep-rooted fishing heritage. Unlike its sandy neighbor Seaton, Beer sits in a steep-sided valley characterized by white chalk cliffs, with a working shingle beach where the local fleet is still hauled up by winches rather than kept in a harbor. The main street is famously flanked by open stone conduits that carry fresh water down to the sea, a feature that has survived for centuries. Historically, the village was built on the trade of Beer Stone - a durable limestone used in both Exeter Cathedral and Westminster Abbey - quarried from the subterranean caves just on the edge of the settlement. Today, the village remains relatively self-contained with its own primary school, a small selection of independent shops, and several pubs that serve as the focal point for the community. The climb out of the village in any direction is significant, but it places you directly on the South West Coast Path, providing a straightforward, if strenuous, walking link to Branscombe in the west or Seaton to the east.
